The Last Trip To Gandahar - Echoes of Paradise EP [BLR001]
Ashley Stevenson (FKA Arthur Jnr) debuted his new project, The Last Trip To Gandahar, with a groover by the name of “R136” on City Fly Records’ (which he co-runs with his pals Jonna, J’Shez and Darran P) In House EP earlier this year. The move sees the Leicester, UK-based producer taking a cool, MPC-laced dip into the realm of disco and soul-sampling house music.
His upcoming debut EP, Echoes of Paradise, is set to drop on Better Listen Records in November 2016. The four track release is chock-full of jazz funk and disco soul aesthetics and serves as a sweet taster for what’s to come from the producer. Expect nothing less than disco paradise when taking a trip to Gandahar.

Ponty Mython - House for Sale EP (BLR002)
For his latest release, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials favorite Ponty Mython has linked up with Washington, DC-based imprint Better Listen to bring you a five track package of globally inspired groovers. The House for Sale EP maintains the sample-based production aesthetic of Better Listen’s debut record, and draws heavily from rare African funk and disco sources. The Vilnius-based producer’s trademark eclecticism is injected throughout the record, with the A-side leaning more towards wonky, left-field house cuts and the flip hosting more disco-like arrangements.

Cody Currie - Beer Machine EP
Newcomer Cody Currie looks to Better Listen Records to host his sophomore EP after lighting things up with his debut on Pusic late in 2016. The effort is stacked with deep disco stylings similar to that of sample + synth maestros Brame & Hamo and Fouk. It’s an exquisitely layered effort from the London kid, one which will please the intellect and dancefloor demand equally.

Dorsi Plantar - Everlast EP [BLR004]
After a smooth debut on Kyoku Records, Copenhagen-based Dorsi Plantar joins team Better Listen for a four track EP of bright, heady grooves. The A-side leans more on the afro-latin and jazzy side of things, while the flip dives deep into disco. Fans of BLR’s previous outings will not be disappointed.
Ethyène - Playin' With Fire EP [BLR005]
Lyon-based beatsmith Ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music; applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. Through releases on longtime underground favorite Kolour LTD and upstart labels like Kyoku, as well as contributions to his own Moonrise Hill Material, the Frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. His collaboration with Better Listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound; maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique.
The Playin With Fire EP is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. The A1 slot sees E joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed Folamour, for the superlative “Why My Love”. Meanwhile, “Loneliness of the Shadow Dancer” continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. The B-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and “I Sold Yayo to Buy Kicks” serving as the Bob James-esque closer. The package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar Philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas.
Don’t be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. And you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.
